El "amor-funámbulo": contradicciones político-emocionales de las nuevas relaciones amorosas

The purpose of this paper is, on the one hand, to describe what I call “tightrope walker love” –the contemporary model of love in Western societies−; on the other, I aim to examine critically its contradictions. This new style of love, which has transcended, but not totally overcome, traditional romanticism, and which is near A. Giddens’ “confluent love” and “pure relation”, has the following features: in relation to its predecessors, it is more democratic; more individualistic; more intimate; more sophisticated from the point of view of emotional intelligence and pliable sexuality; more egalitarian; more utilitarian; and more legalist. However, two kinds of contradictions may be raised: external and internal. External contradictions involve, firstly, the flexibility of the labor market and the economy, in contrast with the psychological assumption of couples and families; and secondly, gender inequality, which denies the whole project. The internal contradictions –those that affect its self-description− may be summed up in the antinomy “liquidity” versus “attachment”. I will conclude arguing in favor of this new style of love, which is morally superior to the other models available, and contend that is contradictions, even if not completely solved, may be softened to a great extent.El propósito de este artículo es, por un lado, caracterizar lo que hemos denominado como “amor-funámbulo” –el nuevo modelo amoroso, contemporáneo y occidental por excelencia− y, por otro, examinar críticamente sus contradicciones. Se trata de un amor que ha superado, aunque no renunciado totalmente, al “romanticismo tradicional”: antes bien, se aproxima al “amor confluente” y a la “relación pura” de A. Giddens. Es un amor más democrático, más individualista, más íntimo, más sofisticado en relación a la inteligencia emocional y a la sexualidad plástica, más igualitario, más utilitarista y, por último, más legalista, en comparación con los modelos normativos anteriores. Sin embargo, se enfrenta con dos tipos de contracciones, tanto externas como internas. De las primeras destacamos la flexibilidad del mercado laboral y de la economía, que choca con los presupuestos psicológicos de la pareja y la familia, y la desigualdad de género, que rompe con todo el proyecto. Resumimos las contradicciones internas, esto es, las propias de su misma auto-concepción, en la antinomia “liquidez” versus “apego”. Por último defenderemos la tesis de que este nuevo modelo de amor es moralmente superior a sus predecesores y que las contradicciones que lo limitan pueden, si bien no superarse, sí limarse notablemente
